A dark horse in the company of such contemporaries as Haydn and Mozart, Johann Baptist Vanhal nonetheless was an intrepid and prolific composer of over 1300 works, and his Concerto For Violin And Orchestra In B Major marks his Freeplay debut. It's a sprightly and elegant piece in three movements, and begins rather aggressively with terse, detached technique. A softer, slower and more melodic second movement conjures images of an early, innocent spring bloom, and then a fully flourished final movement closes the piece in a vivacious triumph.
