Based on the final words of Jesus Christ, this piece by Joseph Haydn was originally written for full orchestra, but is presented here in a solo piano setting. Each sonata corresponds to a separate phrase and the composer's ability to paint a vivid picture with sound is put to the test as powerful words and images emerge from out of the piano's soundboard. The Terramoto ("Earthquake") is especially noteworthy for its violent, highly chromatic movement, bringing the piece to a powerful close.
