Naughty Marietta opened on Broadway in 1910 and contains some of Victor Herbert's best, and most well-known, songs, with a libretto by Rida Johnson Young. As in Herbert's other operettas, the mood is overwhelmingly positive and carefree, but some of the strongest songs are those that are more dramatic and heartfelt. "Ah Sweet Mystery Of Life" is an absolute classic, as is "Neath The Southern Moon," both of which feature excellent vocal work from the soloists. Herbert and Young's Naughty Marietta shows why the operetta was such a popular form of entertainment at the dawn of the 20th Century and the music has certainly stood the test of time.
